Privacy Policy

VoteOut collects as little as the mechanism allows. There are no accounts, and voting requires no sign-up.
Voting: what is stored in your browser
When you vote, we store two things to stop the same person voting twice on one listing:
- A random token in your browser's
localStorage. It is not an identifier we can connect to you as a person, and it never leaves this site. - A device fingerprint (an identifier derived from your browser and device configuration, produced by the open-source FingerprintJS library in your own browser). We store only the resulting identifier alongside your vote.
These are tracking technologies under the GDPR and comparable laws, used solely for anti-abuse — not for advertising, profiling, or sale. Clearing site data removes the token; we do not object if you do, and we accept that this makes the vote count approximate.
Opening a listing's link
Each listing shows how many people have opened its link. When you follow one, we record that it happened: the listing, the same random browser token described above, a hashed IP address, and the time. The token is what makes the number people rather than clicks — following the same link again does not count twice.
We do not record where you go next, and nothing about this leaves the site. Following a link does not tell the destination anything about you beyond what your browser sends any site you visit; we attach no referrer and no identifier to the outbound request.
IP addresses
We do not store IP addresses. To rate-limit automated voting and clicking, we compute a salted one-way hash of the address and store only that hash alongside the vote or click record. It cannot be reversed into an address.
Listings and payments
For a listing we store the URL you submitted, its normalized form and domain, the short description our server reads from that page's own metadata when you submit it, vote counts, timestamps, and a record of your purchase — including the exact wording of the terms that were shown to you above the payment button, and when you accepted them. That consent record exists to resolve payment disputes and is retained while it may be needed for that purpose.
Card details never reach us. The checkout page is hosted and processed by Stripe, which collects the card details, your billing address, and whatever else it needs for payment processing and tax calculation, under its own privacy policy. We receive back the payment status, the amount, and an order reference — never the card number. We are the seller of record for the listing itself.
Buying extra time for a listing is the same kind of record, and it does not have to be your own listing. If you buy hours for somebody else's entry, we store the purchase against that entry; the owner sees the hours appear on their clock, not who paid for them.
Public information
Listed URLs, descriptions, vote tallies, click counts, waitlist bid amounts, and Honor Roll entries are public by design. Honor Roll entries and their frozen tallies are permanent.
The public figures are totals only. No visitor is identifiable from them, and we do not publish or sell the underlying vote and click records.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold, or to object to its processing. Write to hello@voteout.xyz. Note that removing a listing does not remove the ban on a domain that was voted out, and does not restore fees.
Analytics and cookies
We set no advertising cookies and run no cross-site trackers. The storage described above is strictly functional.
